Seeing the Light of God

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad saw a light and was asked if he saw his Lord.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Shaqiq: "I said to Abu Dharr: 'If I saw the Prophet then I would asked him". He said: 'What is it that you would have asked him about?' I said: 'I would have asked him if Muhammad saw his Lord?' He said: 'I did ask him that, and he said: I saw light'."
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التُّسْتَرِيِّ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ، قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي ذَرٍّ لَوْ أَدْرَكْتُ النَّبِيَّ فَسَأَلْتُهُ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ عَمَّا كُنْتَ تَسْأَلُهُ قُلْتُ كُنْتُ أَسْأَلُهُ هَلْ رَأَى مُحَمَّدٌ رَبَّهُ فَقَالَ قَدْ سَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ نُورٌ أَنَّى أَرَاهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the vision of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. It is narrated by Abdullah bin Shaqiq and Abu Dharr that when Abdullah asked Abu Dharr what he would have asked the prophet if he had seen him, Abu Dharr replied that he would have asked whether or not the prophet had seen his Lord. The prophet then replied that he had seen a light. This hadith teaches us that although we may not be able to see God directly, we can still experience His presence through His light. We can also learn from this hadith that it is important to ask questions in order to gain knowledge and understanding about our faith.
