Seeking Forgiveness from Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to ask Allah for forgiveness seventy times a day.

Narrated Az-Zuhri: from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurairah may Allah be pleased with him (regarding): 'And seek forgiveness for your sins, and also for the believing men and women (47:19)'. That the Messenger of Allah said: "Indeed I ask Allah for forgiveness seventy times a day".
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، رضى الله عنه ‏:‏ ‏(‏واسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ‏)‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏"‏ إِنِّي لأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ فِي الْيَوْمِ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏ - وَيُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَيْضًا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَ ‏"‏ إِنِّي لأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ فِي الْيَوْمِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ‏"‏ إِنِّي لأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ فِي الْيَوْمِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَرَوَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Az-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah and Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him], teaches us the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah. It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that he asked for forgiveness seventy times a day. This shows us how important it is to seek repentance and ask for forgiveness in order to stay close to our Creator. We should strive to make this part of our daily routine and remember that no matter how many sins we have committed, if we sincerely repent and ask for His mercy, He will forgive us. Additionally, this hadith also encourages us to pray regularly as it was through prayer that the Prophet ﷺ sought repentance from his Lord.
