Sahih al-Bukhari 3017 (Book 56, Hadith 226) #2886
Punishment for Discarding Religion

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the punishment of those who discard their religion and how it should be done according to the Prophet (ﷺ).

Narrated 'Ikrima: 'Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn 'Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment'. No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the punishment for those who discard their religion. According to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, if someone discards their religion, they should be killed. However, he also said that one should not punish with Allah's punishment. This means that one should not use fire or any other form of torture as a form of punishment. Instead, killing is seen as an appropriate way to punish someone who has discarded their faith. The values taught in this hadith are justice and mercy; justice in punishing those who have committed wrongs against society and mercy in not punishing them with Allah's punishments such as fire or torture.
