Prohibiting Killing of Women and Children in Battle

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the killing of women and children during battle.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: During some of the ghazwah ( Battle ) of Allah's Messenger a woman was found killed, so Allah's Messenger forbade the killing of women and children.
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي أُسَامَةَ حَدَّثَكُمْ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ وُجِدَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مَقْتُولَةً فِي بَعْضِ مَغَازِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ، فَنَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَنْ قَتْلِ النِّسَاءِ وَالصِّبْيَانِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of killing women and children during battle. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar that during some of the battles fought by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a woman was found killed. Upon seeing this, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade the killing of women and children in battle. This hadith teaches us to be merciful even in times of war or conflict. We should not take away innocent lives as it goes against Islamic teachings which emphasize on protecting human life at all costs. The values taught through this hadith are mercy, compassion and justice for all regardless of gender or age.
