The Vision of Prophet Muhammad and the Zaqqum Tree

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the vision that Prophet Muhammad saw on the night of his journey to Bait Al-Maqdis and identifies it as the Zaqqum tree.

Ibn 'Abbas commented on Allah, the Most High, saying: And We made not the vision which We showed but a trial for mankind (17:60). He said: "It is the vision he saw with his eyes, on the night the Prophet was taken on the journey to Bait Al-Maqdis. And the accursed tree in the Qur'an (17:60). He said: "It is the Zaqqum tree".
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ‏:‏ ‏(‏ ومَا جَعَلْنَا الرُّؤْيَا الَّتِي أَرَيْنَاكَ إِلاَّ فِتْنَةً لِلنَّاسِ ‏)‏ قَالَ هِيَ رُؤْيَا عَيْنٍ أُرِيَهَا النَّبِيُّ لَيْلَةَ أُسْرِيَ بِهِ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏:‏ ‏(‏وَالشَّجَرَةَ الْمَلْعُونَةَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ ‏)‏ هِيَ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ ‏.‏ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a vision that Prophet Muhammad saw on the night of his journey to Bait Al Maqsud. Ibn 'Abbas commented on Allah's words in Quran 17:60 which states "And We made not the vision which We showed but a trial for mankind". He said that this was referring to what Prophet Muhammad saw with his eyes during this journey. He also identified it as being related to the accursed tree mentioned in Quran 17:60 which he identified as being the Zaqquam tree. This hadith teaches us that Allah tests mankind through trials and visions such as this one experienced by Prophet Muhammad.
