Jami at-Tirmidhi 3085 (Book 47, Hadith 137) #28734
Taking Spoils of War and its Consequences

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that Allah has given us permission to take spoils of war, but before this permission was granted, taking spoils of war would have resulted in severe punishment from Allah.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: that the Prophet said: "None of the black heads (meaning the Children of Adam since (most of) their heads are black) before you partook of spoils of war, but fire from the heavens would be sent down upon them, consuming them". Sulaiman (one of the narrators) said "No one says this except for Abu Hurairah now".So on the day of Badr when they had the spoils of war before it was made lawful for them, Allah Most High revealed: Were it not a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the consequences of taking spoils of war before it was made lawful by Allah. It is narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said that if people took spoils of war before it was made lawful for them, fire from the heavens would be sent down upon them and consume them. The Prophet then quoted a verse from the Quran which states that if it were not for a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe torment would have touched those who took part in Badr for what they took. This hadith teaches us to be mindful and careful when dealing with matters related to religion as we must always abide by what is permissible according to Islamic law. We should also remember that even though we are allowed to take part in wars and receive rewards for our efforts, we must still remain humble and grateful towards Allah as He is ultimately responsible for all our successes.
