The Revelation of Surah Al-Maidah

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that the ayah of Surah Al-Maidah was revealed on two occasions, Friday and the Day of 'Arafah.

Narrated 'Ammar bin Abi 'Ammar: "Ibn Abbas recited: This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion (5:3). And a Jew was with him who said: 'If this Ayah was revealed to us then we would have taken that day as a day of celebration'. So Ibn 'Abbas said: 'Indeed it was revealed on two 'Eids: On Friday, and on the Day of 'Arafah'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the revelation of a verse from the Quran, specifically from sura al Ma’ida. The verse reads “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”. It was revealed twice in history; once on a Friday and once on the day of Arafath. A Jew who was present with Ibn Abbas at that time said that if this ayat was revealed to them they would have celebrated it as an Eid or festival. Ibn Abbas then explained to him that it is indeed an occasion to celebrate because it has been revealed twice in history; once on a Friday and once on the day of Arafath which are both days Muslims celebrate as Eids or festivals.
