Jami at-Tirmidhi 3031 (Book 47, Hadith 83) #28680
The Blind Man's Request to the Prophet

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet ﷺ ordering 'Amr bin Umm Maktum, who was blind, to bring him a shoulder bone and inkwell after Allah revealed the ayah 'Not equal are those of the believers who sit'.

Narrated Al-Bara bin 'Azib: "When the following was revealed: 'Not equal are those of the believers who sit (4:95)' 'Amr bin Umm Maktum came to the Prophet ". He said: "He was blind, so he said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What do you order me with? Indeed my vision is disabled'. So Allah Most High revealed this Ayah: 'Except those who are disabled'. So the Prophet said: 'Bring me a shoulder bone and inkwell' - or 'Bring me a tablet and an inkwell'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be considerate of people with disabilities; Follow revelations from Allah; Make adjustments when necessary.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Allah revealed an ayah in response to a request from Amr bin Umm Maktum. Amr was blind and he asked the Prophet what he should do since his vision was disabled. In response to this request Allah revealed an ayah that exempted those with disabilities from certain obligations. The Prophet then asked Amr to bring him a shoulder bone and inkwell so that he could write down this revelation. This hadith teaches us that we should be considerate of people with disabilities and not expect them to do things they cannot do due to their disability. It also shows us how important it is for us as Muslims to follow revelations from Allah even if it means making some adjustments in our lives or expectations of others.
