The Power of Recitation

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was moved to tears while listening to a recitation of Surat An-Nisa.

Narrated 'Alqamah: "'Abdullah said: 'The Messenger of Allah commanded me to recite for him while he was on the Minbar. So I recited from Surat An-Nisa for him, until I reached: How then (will it be) when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (Muhammad) as a witness against these people? (4:41) The Messenger of Allah was beckoning me (to stop) with his hand, and I looked at him and his eyes were flowing with tears".
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ‏.‏ فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغْتُ‏:‏ ‏(‏ فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلاَءِ شَهِيدًا ‏)‏ غَمَزَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ بِيَدِهِ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَعَيْنَاهُ تَدْمَعَانِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَكَذَا رَوَى أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَا هُوَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power of reciting the Quran. It is narrated by Alqamah that when Abdullah was reciting Surat An-Nisa in front of the Prophet Muhammad, he was so moved by it that his eyes filled with tears. This shows us how powerful and meaningful the words of Allah are and how they can move us emotionally. It also teaches us that we should take time out from our busy lives to recite and reflect on the verses of Allah's book as it can bring about a deep spiritual connection with Him.
