The Consequences of False Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking a false oath to deprive someone of their property is wrong and will lead to Allah's anger.

Narrated 'Abdullah: that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever takes a false oath to deprive a Muslim of his property, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him". So Al-Ash'ath bin Qais said: "By Allah! This was about me. There was a dispute between myself and a Jewish man who denied my right, and I complained against him to the Prophet . So the Messenger of Allah said to me: 'Do you have any proof?' I said: 'No'. So he said to the Jew: 'Take an oath'. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If he takes an oath then I will lose my property'. So Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed: Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths. until the end of the Ayah. (3:77)"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the consequences of taking a false oath in order to deprive someone else of their property. It is narrated by Abdullah that the Prophet Muhammad said that whoever takes a false oath in order to take away another person's property will face Allah's wrath. Al-Ash'ath bin Qais was involved in a dispute with a Jewish man who denied his right and he complained against him to the Prophet Muhammad. When asked if he had any proof, Al-Ash'ath replied no and so the Prophet told the Jew to take an oath. Al-Ash'ath feared that if he took an oath then he would lose his property but Allah revealed verse 3:77 which states "Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths". This verse serves as reminder for us all not to take false oaths as it goes against God's covenant and will result in His anger.
