Jami at-Tirmidhi 2971 (Book 47, Hadith 23) #28620
Differentiating Between Night and Day

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Adi bin Hatim about fasting and how to differentiate between night and day.

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about the fast, he said: 'Until the white (light) thread of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night)'" - he said: "So I took two ropes, one white and the other black to look at them. So the Messenger of Allah said to me" - it was something that Sufyan (a sub narrator) did not remember - so he said: "It is only the night and the day".

QUICK LESSONS:
Fast during Ramadan; Be observant; Understand differences; Follow religious obligations properly .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Adi bin Hatim about the importance of fasting in Islam. He explained that one should fast until they can distinguish between the white thread of dawn from the black thread of night. To demonstrate this concept further he asked Adi to take two ropes - one white and one black - so that he could understand the difference between them. He then said that it is only night and day which are meant by this hadith. This hadith teaches us about the importance of fasting during Ramadan as well as being able to differentiate between night and day in order to observe our religious obligations properly. It also teaches us about being observant in our daily lives so that we can recognize when something is different or out of place.
