Jami at-Tirmidhi 2943 (Book 46, Hadith 17) #28591
The Seven Modes of Reciting Surat Al-Furqan

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam how to recite Surat Al-Furqan, and how it was revealed in seven modes.

Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: "I passed by Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam while he was reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah . I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways, which the Messenger of Allah had not taught me. I was about to jump over him during his Salat, but waited until he said the Salam. When he had said the Salam, I strangled him with his upper-garment and said: 'Who taught you this Surah which I heard you reciting?' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah taught it to me'. I said to him: 'You lie! By Allah! The Messenger of Allah taught me this Surah which you were reciting'. I dragged him to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I heard this one reciting Surat Al-Furqan in a manner different from how you taught me, and you taught me Surat Al-Furqan'. The Prophet said: 'Release him O 'Umar! Recite O Hisham'. So he recited it for him as I had heard him reciting. Then the Prophet said to me: 'This is how it was revealed'. Then the Prophet said to me, 'Recite O 'Umar'. So I recited the recitation which the Prophet taught me. The Prophet said: 'This is how it was revealed'. Then the Prophet said 'Indeed this Qur'an was revealed in seven modes, so recite of it what is easier for you'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on reciting the Quran. It tells us that when Umar heard Hisham reciting a surah differently than he was taught by the Prophet Muhammad, he became angry and strangled him with his upper garment. However, when they went to the Prophet for clarification on who was right in their recitations of this surah, it turned out that both were correct as it was revealed in seven different modes. This hadith teaches us that we should not be so quick to judge others without first seeking clarification from a reliable source such as our beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH. We should also remember that there are multiple ways of doing things correctly and we should respect each other's differences even if they don't match our own beliefs or practices.
