Jami at-Tirmidhi 2867 (Book 44, Hadith 9) #28514
The Date-Palm Tree of the Believer

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ asked his companions to guess what tree does not shed its foliage and Abdullah thought it was the date-palm, but he was too shy to say it. When 'Umar heard about it, he said that if Abdullah had said it, he would have been more pleased than anything else.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: that the Messenger of Allah said: "Indeed there is a tree that does not shed its foliage, and it is is similar to the believer. Can any of you tell me what it is?" 'Abdullah said: "The people started thinking about the trees of the desert. And it occurred to me that it may be the date-palm". Then the Prophet said: "It is the date-palm". But I was shy - meaning to say anything"'.Abdullah said: "So I informed 'Umar about what I had thought of, and he said: 'If you had said it, that would be more beloved to me than this or that'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak up when you know something or have an opinion; Appreciate knowledge shared by others; Believe in Allah's power over nature

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. He asked them to guess what tree does not shed its foliage and one of his companions, Abdullah thought that it was the date palm tree. However, he was too shy to say so in front of everyone else. When Umar heard about this later on, he expressed how pleased he would have been if Abdullah had spoken up with his answer. This hadith teaches us several values such as belief in Allah's power over nature and also encourages us to be brave enough to speak up when we know something or have an opinion even if we are scared or shy about expressing ourselves in public. It also shows us how important companionship is as Umar appreciated Abdullah's knowledge even though others did not hear him express himself directly.
