Jami at-Tirmidhi 2865 (Book 44, Hadith 7) #28512
The Parable of Reciting and Not Reciting The Quran

SUMMARY: The hadith compares the believer who recites the Qur'an to a citron, which has a nice fragrance and taste; the believer who does not recite the Qur'an to a date, which has no smell but is sweet; and the hypocrite who recites or does not recite the Qur'an to basil or colocynth respectively, both of which have nice fragrances but bitter tastes.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: that the Messenger of Allah narrated: "The parable of the believer who recites the Qur'an is that of a citron, its fragrance is nice and its taste is nice. The parable of the believer who does not recite the Qur'an is that of a date, it has no smell but its taste is sweet. The parable of the hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is that of basil, its fragrance is nice but its taste is bitter. The parable of the hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is that of the Colocynth, its smell is better and its taste is bitter'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Have faith in Allah SWT regardless of your ability to read from Quran; understand that those with bad intentions will never benefit from reading it .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith compares believers who recite and do not recite the Quran to different fruits. A believer who recites is compared to a citron, which has both a nice fragrance and taste. A believer who does not recite is compared to a date, which may have no smell but still tastes sweet. On the other hand, hypocrites are compared to basil or colocynth depending on whether they do or do not read from it respectively. Both these fruits have pleasant smells but bitter tastes. This hadith teaches us that although reading from it may be beneficial for one's faith in Allah SWT, even if one cannot read from it due their circumstances they can still be rewarded by Allah SWT for their faith in Him alone. It also teaches us that those with bad intentions will never benefit from reading it as their hearts are filled with hypocrisy instead of faith in Allah SWT .
