Sahih al-Bukhari 2979 (Book 56, Hadith 188) #2848
The Two Belted Woman

SUMMARY: Asma prepared journey-food for the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and when she could not find anything to tie the food-container and water skin with, Abu Bakr suggested her to cut her waist belt into two pieces and use it for tying them.

Narrated Asma: I prepared the journey-food for Allah's Messenger in Abu Bakr's house when he intended to emigrate to Medina. I could not find anything to tie the food-container and the water skin with. So, I said to Abu Bakr, "By Allah, I do not find anything to tie (these things) with except my waist belt". He said, "Cut it into two pieces and tie the water-skin with one piece and the food-container with the other (the subnarrator added, "She did accordingly and that was the reason for calling her Dhatun-Nitaqain (ie twobelted woman)).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be willing to sacrifice your possessions if necessary; Help others; Fulfill your duties towards Allah SWT

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman named Asma who was preparing journey-food for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Abu Bakr's house. She did not have anything to tie the food container and water skin with so she asked Abu Bakr what she should do. He suggested that she cut her waist belt into two pieces and use one piece to tie the food container and another piece to tie the water skin. This act of hers earned her a nickname ‘Dhatun Nitaqain’ which means ‘the two belted woman’. This hadith teaches us that we should be willing to sacrifice our possessions if it is necessary in order to help others or fulfill our duties towards Allah SWT. It also shows us how generous Abu Bakr was as he did not hesitate in suggesting his daughter give up something precious of hers in order to help someone else out.
