Protecting Modesty and Being Shy from Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of protecting one's modesty and being shy from Allah.

Narrated Bahz bin Hakim: "My father narrated to me from my grandfather, who said: 'I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Regarding our 'Awrah, what of it must we cover and what of it may we leave?" He said: "Protect your 'Awrah except from your wife or what your right hand possesses"'. He said: "What about a man with another man?" He said: "If you are able to not let anyone see it, then do so". I said: "What about a man when he is alone?" He said: "Allah is most deserving of being shy from Him".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ جَدِّي، قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَوْرَاتُنَا مَا نَأْتِي مِنْهَا وَمَا نَذَرُ قَالَ ‏"‏ احْفَظْ عَوْرَتَكَ إِلاَّ مِنْ زَوْجَتِكَ أَوْ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَكُونُ مَعَ الرَّجُلِ قَالَ ‏"‏ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ لاَ يَرَاهَا أَحَدٌ فَافْعَلْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ وَالرَّجُلُ يَكُونُ خَالِيًا ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُسْتَحْيَا مِنْهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ ‏.‏ وَجَدُّ بَهْزٍ اسْمُهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ حَيْدَةَ الْقُشَيْرِيُّ وَقَدْ رَوَى الْجُرَيْرِيُّ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ وَالِدُ بَهْزٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of protecting one's modesty and being shy from Allah. It was narrated by Bahz bin Hakim who said that his father narrated to him from his grandfather that he asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about what parts of their bodies they should cover. The Prophet replied that they should protect their 'awrah except for when with their wives or what their right hand possesses. When asked about a man with another man, the Prophet said if it can be avoided then it should be done so. When asked about a man when he is alone, the Prophet said that Allah is most deserving of being shy from Him. This hadith teaches us to always maintain our modesty and privacy in front of others as well as to have an attitude of humility towards Allah Almighty at all times.
