Jami at-Tirmidhi 2719 (Book 42, Hadith 32) #28354
Generosity in Times of Need

SUMMARY: This hadith is about three companions of the Prophet ﷺ who were suffering from hunger and thirst, and the Prophet ﷺ brought them to his family where there were three goats. The companions milked the goats and each person drank their share, with a share left for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came during the night to drink his share.

Narrated Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad: "Two of my companions and I went and presented ourselves to the Companions of the Prophet , for our hearing and sight had gone from suffering (hunger and thirst). But there was no one who would accept us. So we went to the Prophet and he brought us to his family where there were three goats. The Prophet said: 'Milk these'. We milked them, and each person drank his share, and we put aside a share for the Messenger of Allah . The Messenger of Allah came during the night and gave the Salam such that it would not wake the sleeping person, and the one who was awake could hear it. Then he went to the Masjid to per form Salat. Then he went for his drink and drank it".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about generosity in times of need. It tells us that when three companions went to seek help from other Companions, they were not accepted. However, when they went to seek help from the Prophet (ﷺ), he showed them great kindness by bringing them to his family where there were three goats which they could milk for sustenance. Furthermore, he even put aside a portion for himself which he drank during the night without waking anyone up or disturbing anyone's sleep. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous towards those who are in need and show kindness even if it means sacrificing something for ourselves as well. We should also be mindful not to disturb others while doing so.
