The Use of Pronouns in Conversation

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ disliked Jabir's use of the pronoun "me" when asking for permission to enter.

Narrated Jabir: "I sought permission to enter upon the Prophet regarding a debt my father owed, so he said: 'Who is this?' I said: 'Me'. He said: 'Me, me'.As if he disliked that".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful and respectful when speaking to others; Address people by their names or titles rather than using pronouns; Show respect and politeness in conversations; Speak politely even while making simple requests like asking for permission.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of using respectful language when speaking to others. In this hadith, Jabir asked for permission to enter upon the Prophet and used the pronoun “me” instead of saying his name. The Prophet responded with “Me, me” as if he was displeased with this choice of words. This shows that it is important to be mindful and respectful when speaking to others, even if it is just a simple request like asking for permission. It also teaches us that we should always address people by their names or titles rather than using pronouns such as “me” or “you” in order to show respect and politeness.
