Jami at-Tirmidhi 2709 (Book 42, Hadith 22) #28344
The Importance of Seeking Permission

SUMMARY: Seeking permission is important and should be done before entering someone's space.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi: that a man peeked in on the Messenger of Allah , in one of the apartments of the Prophet , while the Prophet had a Midrah (an iron comb) with which he was scratching his head. So the Prophet said: "If I knew that you were looking then I would have poked your eyes with it. Seeking permission has only been enjoined because of the sight".

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek permission before entering someone else’s space or engaging in activities which could cause them discomfort or distress

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of seeking permission before entering someone's space. It was narrated by Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi that a man peeked in on the Messenger of Allah while he was scratching his head with an iron comb. The Prophet then said, "If I knew that you were looking then I would have poked your eyes with it." This statement emphasizes the importance of seeking permission as it is a sign of respect and privacy for others. It also shows us how we should treat our fellow human beings with kindness and respect, even if they do not seek permission first.

The Prophet's words also remind us to be mindful when we enter someone else's space, whether it is their home or any other place where they may feel uncomfortable if we enter without asking for their consent first. We must always remember to show respect and consideration for others by asking for their permission before entering their personal space or engaging in any activity that could potentially cause them discomfort or distress.
