Sahih al-Bukhari 2954 (Book 56, Hadith 166) #2826
Changing Instructions in Military Expeditions

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) instructed his followers to burn two men from Quraish, but later changed his instructions and told them to kill them instead.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (ra): Allah's Messenger sent us on military expedition telling us, "If you find such and such persons (he named two men from Quraish), burn them fire". Then we came to bid him farewell, when we wanted to set out, he said: "Previously I ordered you to burn so-and-so and so-and-so with fire, but as punishment with fire is done by none except Allah, if you capture them, kill them, (instead)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions given by leaders , obey Allah's commands .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (ra) speaks of a military expedition that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sent out. He initially instructed the followers to burn two men from Quraish with fire, however he later changed his instructions and told them to kill them instead. This hadith teaches us that punishment with fire is only done by Allah, and it is not permissible for humans to do so. It also teaches us that even if a leader gives an instruction, they can change their mind if they feel it is necessary or more appropriate for the situation at hand. This hadith also serves as a reminder of how important it is for Muslims to follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in all aspects of life, including during military expeditions.
