Jami at-Tirmidhi 2405 (Book 36, Hadith 103) #28040
The Sweet Tongues and Bitter Hearts of Mankind

SUMMARY: Allah has created creatures who have sweet tongues but bitter hearts, and He will test them with a Fitnah.

Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Prophet(s.a.w) said: "Indeed Allah, Most High, said:'I have created creatures whose tongues are sweeter than honey and their hearts are more bitter than aloes. So by Me, I swear to abase them with a Fitnah, leaving them utterly devoid of reason. Is it Me whom they try to delude, or it is against Me whom they conspire?'"

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak kindly & politely towards others; Improve oneself spiritually & morally; Stay humble before God .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the nature of mankind. Allah has created us with sweet tongues, which means that we are able to speak kindly and politely to one another. However, our hearts can be more bitter than aloeswood or aloe vera, meaning that we can sometimes be unkind or cruel in our thoughts and actions towards others. Despite this duality in human nature, Allah will still test us with a trial known as Fitnah. This trial is meant to help us recognize our weaknesses so that we may strive to become better people by improving ourselves spiritually and morally. Ultimately, this hadith serves as a reminder for us all to stay humble before Allah and not think too highly of ourselves because He knows what lies within our hearts even if it is hidden from the world around us.
