Jami at-Tirmidhi 2343 (Book 36, Hadith 40) #27977
The Virtue of Giving Surplus

SUMMARY: Giving your surplus to those in need is better than keeping it for yourself, and it is important to start with those who are dependent on you.

Abu Umamah narrated that the Prophet (s.a.w) said: "O son of Adam! If you give your surplus it is better for you, and if you keep it, it is worse for you, but there is no harm with what is sufficient. And begin(the giving) with your dependents, and the upper hand (giving) is better than the lower hand (receiving)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give your surplus away willingly and without obligation; start with those who are dependent on you; practice moderation when giving charity so you don't cause yourself harm or hardship.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages us to give our surplus away, as it is better for us than keeping it. It also emphasizes the importance of starting with those who are dependent on us, such as family members or close friends. The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) taught that giving from the upper hand is better than receiving from the lower hand, meaning that giving charity should be done willingly and not out of obligation or guilt. This hadith also teaches us about moderation; we should not give away all our wealth but rather keep what we need and give away what we can spare without causing ourselves harm or hardship.
