Sahih al-Bukhari 2910 (Book 56, Hadith 123) #2783
Faith in Allah Prevents Punishment

SUMMARY: A Bedouin took the Prophet's sword while he was sleeping and challenged him, but the Prophet responded with faith in Allah and did not punish the Bedouin.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: That he proceeded in the company of Allah's Messenger towards Najd to participate in a Ghazwa. (Holybattle) When Allah's Messenger returned, he too returned with him. Midday came upon them while they were in a valley having many thorny trees. Allah's Messenger and the people dismounted and dispersed to rest in the shade of the trees. Allah's Messenger rested under a tree and hung his sword on it. We all took a nap and suddenly we heard Allah's Messenger calling us. (We woke up) to see a bedouin with him. The Prophet said, "This bedouin took out my sword while I was sleeping and when I woke up, I found the unsheathed sword in his hand and he challenged me saying, 'Who will save you from me?' I said thrice, 'Allah'. The Prophet did not punish him but sat down.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how faith in Allah can protect us from harm. It tells of a time when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was travelling with his companions to participate in a battle. They stopped for a rest under some trees, and while they were sleeping, a bedouin came by and took the Prophet's sword. When he woke up, he found that it was missing and saw that it was now being held by this bedouin who challenged him to fight for it back. Instead of getting angry or punishing him, however, the Prophet ﷺ calmly said "Allah" three times as if to remind himself of his faith in God's protection. This story teaches us that even when we are faced with difficult situations or people who challenge us, we should always remember our faith in Allah and trust Him to protect us from harm instead of relying on our own strength or angering others unnecessarily.
