Jami at-Tirmidhi 2180 (Book 33, Hadith 23) #27813
Following the Way of Those Before Us

SUMMARY: The Prophet (s.a.w) warned the Companions against following the practices of those before them, as it was similar to what Musa's people had said in their time.

Abu Waqid Al-Laithi narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) went out to Hunain he passed a tree that the idolaters called Dhat Anwat upon which they hung their weapons. They(the Companions) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Make a Dhat Anwat for us as they have a Dhat Anwat'. The Prophet (s.a.w) said: "Subhan Allah! This is like what Musa's people said: Make for us a god like their gods. By the One in Whose is my soul! You shall follow the way of those who were before you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship Allah alone without any partners or idols .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is warning his companions against following in the footsteps of those who came before them. He is referring to a tree that was worshipped by idolaters and how they hung their weapons on it as an act of worship. This is similar to what happened with Moses’ people when they asked him to make a god for them like other nations had done before them. The Prophet ﷺ is reminding us that we should not follow in these footsteps and instead focus on worshipping Allah alone without any partners or idols. We should also be careful not to imitate practices from other cultures or religions that are contrary to Islamic teachings and values, even if they seem attractive or popular at first glance.
