Jami at-Tirmidhi 2136 (Book 32, Hadith 4) #27769
Predestination and Good Deeds

SUMMARY: Everyone's place in the afterlife is predetermined, but one should still strive to do good deeds.

'Ali narrated: "We were with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and he was scraping the ground, when he raised his head to the heavens, then said: 'There is not one of you but (his place) is known' – Waki said: 'His place has been decreed (be it) in the Fire, and (or) his place in Paradise'. They said: 'Shall we not rely upon this O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'No. Work, for everyone is facilitated for what he was created'."(Sahih)

QUICK LESSONS:
Work hard and strive for goodness .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith speaks of a conversation between Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions. Prophet Muhammad was scraping the ground when he raised his head to the heavens and said that everyone's place in the afterlife is known. His companions asked if they could rely on this, to which he replied no, as everyone should still strive to do good deeds. This hadith teaches us that although our fate has been predetermined by Allah, we must still work hard and do good deeds in order to gain rewards from Allah. We must not become complacent or lazy because of predestination; rather we should use it as motivation for us to work harder for our own benefit in this life and hereafter.
