Intoxication and Its Unlawfulness

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that anything that can intoxicate in large amounts is unlawful even in small amounts.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah : That the Messenger of Allah said: "Whatever a lot of it intoxicates, a little of it is unlawful". He said: There are narrations on this topic from Sa'd, 'Aishah, 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, Ibn 'Umar, and Khawwat bin Jubair. Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Hasan Gharib as a narration of Jabir.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي الْفُرَاتِ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ وَعَائِشَةَ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَابْنِ عُمَرَ وَخَوَّاتِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ حَدِيثِ جَابِرٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us about the unlawfulness of intoxication. He said that anything which can intoxicate in large amounts is also unlawful even if it is consumed in small quantities. This hadith has been narrated by several companions of the Prophet such as Sa'd, 'Aishah, 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, Ibn 'Umar and Khawwat bin Jubair. It teaches us to stay away from any kind of substance or activity which can lead to intoxication as it is considered haram or forbidden according to Islamic teachings. We should strive for inshirah or contentment with what Allah has given us instead of seeking pleasure through activities which are not permissible according to Islam. We should also be aware of the khatar or danger associated with indulging in such activities and stay away from them for our own benefit and safety.
