Acceptable Stakes in Sports

SUMMARY: Stakes are only acceptable in archery, camel racing, and horse racing.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: That the Prophet said: "No stake is acceptable except in archery, racing a camel, and racing a horse".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ أَبِي نَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ سَبَقَ إِلاَّ فِي نَصْلٍ أَوْ خُفٍّ أَوْ حَافِرٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ

This hadith is about the stakes that are allowed to be placed on certain sports. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that stakes are only acceptable when it comes to archery, camel racing, and horse racing. This means that people should not place bets or wagers on any other sport or activity as this is not permissible according to Islamic teachings. The values taught by this hadith include moderation and self control when it comes to gambling and betting activities as well as respect for the rules of Islam. It also teaches us to be mindful of our actions and how they may affect others negatively if we do not adhere to the teachings of Islam.
