Jami at-Tirmidhi 1582 (Book 21, Hadith 44) #27192
The Judgement of Sa'd bin Mu'adh

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet ﷺ trying to stop the bleeding of Sa'd bin Mu'adh's arm with fire, and then Sa'd bin Mu'adh judging that the men of Banu Quraizah should be killed and their women should be spared.

Narrated Jabir: "On the day of (the battle of) Al-Ahzab, Sa'd bin Mu'adh was struck by an arrow such that the upper vein or lower vein of his forearm was severed. So the Messenger of Allah tried to stop it with fire, but it made his arm bleed profusely so he left it. Then he did it another time but it caused it to bleed profusely. Upon seeing that he said: 'O Allah! Do not allow my soul depart until my eyes are comforted by elimination of Banu Quraizah'. He pressed his vein closed and it did not bleed a drop before they surrendered to the arbitration of Sa'd bin Mu'adh. He (the Prophet ) sent to him (Sa'd) who judged that their men should be killed, their women should be spared, and that the Muslims may share them among themselves. With this, the Messenger of Allah said: 'You have judged according to Allah's judgement for them'. And they were four hundred. Then when he finished killing them, his vein opened up and he died". He said: There are narrations on this topic from Abu Sa'eed and 'Atiyyah Al-Qurazi. Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a battle between Muslims and non-Muslims called Al-Ahzab. During this battle, one of the Muslim warriors named Sa'd bin Mu’adh was struck by an arrow in his forearm which caused his vein to be severed. The Prophet Muhammad tried to stop the bleeding with fire but it only made it worse so he stopped trying. Then he asked Allah not to take away his soul until Banu Quraizah were eliminated from existence. After this prayer, Sa’d was asked by the Prophet Muhammad to judge what should happen to them and he judged that their men should be killed while their women were spared and shared among Muslims as slaves or wives. This judgement was accepted by Allah as it followed His judgement for them according to Islamic law at that time. After this judgement was passed down, Sa’d died due to his wound opening up again after being closed off earlier on in order for him not bleed out before passing down his judgement on Banu Quraizah .
