Making Vows Over Uncontrollable Matters

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to make a vow about something that one has no control over.

Narrated Thabit bin Adh-Dahhak: That the Prophet said: "It is not for a person to vow about that over which he has no control".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make promises only when you are certain you can keep them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that it is not permissible for a person to make a vow about something they have no control over. This means that if someone makes a promise or an oath to do something which is out of their power or ability, then this promise will not be valid in the eyes of Allah. For example, if someone promises to bring rain by praying and fasting but they have no control over the weather then this promise will not be valid. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that we should only make promises and vows about things which are within our power and ability so as to ensure we can fulfill them. We should also remember that Allah knows our intentions and He will reward us for any good deeds we do even if it was beyond our capability.
