Jami at-Tirmidhi 1487 (Book 18, Hadith 29) #27079
The Consequences of Keeping Dogs

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog for any purpose other than hunting or guarding livestock will result in a deduction of two Qirat from one's reward.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: That the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever keeps a dog" - or: "acquires a dog" - "neither of hunting nor to guard livestock, then two Qirat are deducted from his reward, daily".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep dogs only when necessary for hunting or guarding livestock .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping dogs. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar, who reported that the Messenger of Allah said that whoever keeps a dog, neither for hunting nor to guard livestock, then two Qirat are deducted from his reward daily. A Qirat is an Islamic unit of measurement used to measure rewards and punishments in the afterlife. Therefore, this hadith warns us against keeping dogs as it can lead to a reduction in our rewards in the hereafter. We should only keep dogs if they are necessary for hunting or guarding livestock; otherwise we should avoid them as much as possible.
