Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited taking a living thing as a shooting target".
The Prophet Muhammad also taught us to be mindful of our actions when it comes to shooting targets for fun or practice. We should never use a living creature as a target because this would cause unnecessary pain and suffering for the animal or creature involved. Instead, we should use inanimate objects such as paper targets or clay pigeons as our shooting targets instead of animals or other creatures that are alive.
In addition to being kind towards animals, the Prophet Muhammad also wanted us to be mindful of how we spend our time when it comes to recreational activities such as shooting sports. He wanted us to focus on activities that bring benefit rather than harm, so he discouraged using live creatures as targets for shooting practice or recreation purposes since this would only lead to unnecessary pain and suffering for the animal involved without any real benefit gained from it in return.
