Eating Animals Killed by Sharp Edges

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught Adi bin Hatim that animals killed by sharp edges can be eaten, while those killed by blunt objects should not be consumed.

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim: I asked the Prophet about game killed by Mir'ad. So he said: 'What you kill by its sharp edge then eat it, and what you kill by its broad side then, it was killed by something blunt'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Ensure that any animal you consume has been slaughtered in an ethical manner so as to avoid unnecessary suffering for the animal. Treat other living creatures with kindness and respect even if they are going to become your food source.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of being mindful when consuming animals. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Adi bin Hatim that animals killed with sharp edges can be eaten, while those killed with blunt objects should not be consumed. This is because a sharp edge will kill the animal quickly and humanely, whereas a blunt object may cause prolonged suffering and pain to the animal before it dies. Therefore, it is important to ensure that any animal we consume has been slaughtered in an ethical manner so as to avoid unnecessary suffering for the animal. Additionally, this hadith also serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards other living creatures and how we must treat them with kindness and respect even if they are going to become our food source.
