Jami at-Tirmidhi 1443 (Book 17, Hadith 26) #27029
Punishment for Drinking Wine

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the punishment for drinking wine, which was forty lashes when the Prophet ﷺ was in power and eighty lashes when 'Umar became Khalifah.

Narrated Anas: That a man who had drunk wine was brought to the Prophet , so he beat him about forty times with two stalks of a palm tree. So Abu Bakr did similarly, and by the time 'Umar became Khalifah he sought council from the people. And 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf said: 'I see that the lightest penalty is eighty lashes,' so 'Umar ordered that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey laws set by Allah, Respect authority figures etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment for drinking alcohol. During the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) it was forty lashes with two stalks of a palm tree. When 'Umar became Khalifah he sought council from people and Abdur-Rahman bin Awf suggested that the lightest penalty should be eighty lashes so 'Umar ordered that. This hadith teaches us that we should not drink alcohol as it is forbidden in Islam and if someone does drink alcohol then they will face a severe punishment according to Islamic law. It also teaches us to respect authority figures such as prophets and caliphs who have been appointed by Allah to lead us on the right path. We must obey their orders even if we don't agree with them because they are closer to Allah than any of us are.
