Jami at-Tirmidhi 1364 (Book 15, Hadith 44) #26942
Freeing Slaves Upon Death

SUMMARY: A man from the Ansar freed six slaves upon his death, but the Prophet was displeased with this and had them draw lots to free two of them.

Narrated 'Imran bin Husain: "A Man from the Ansar freed six slaves of his upon his death, and he did not have any wealth aside from them. That was conveyed to the Prophet , and he said some harsh words about him". He said: "Then he called for them and he divided them and had them draw lots. So he freed two of them and left four as slaves".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before making decisions related to freeing one's own slave(s). Treat your slave(s) fairly and kindly throughout their lives in servitude.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man from the Ansar who freed six slaves upon his death. The Prophet was displeased with this and asked for them to be brought before him. He then divided them and had them draw lots, so that two of them were freed while four remained as slaves. This teaches us that freeing all one's slaves at once is not always the best option, as it can lead to hardship for those who are left behind in slavery. It also shows us that we should think carefully about our decisions when it comes to freeing our own slaves, so that we can ensure their well-being after they have been set free. We should also remember that Allah has given us a great responsibility when it comes to taking care of our own slaves; therefore, we must make sure that they are treated fairly and kindly throughout their lives in servitude.
