Forbidding Taking Wages for Cupping

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ forbade taking wages for cupping and instead suggested to use it to feed water-carrying camels and slaves.

Narrated Ibn Muhayyisah of Banu Harithah: From his father, that he sought permission from the Prophet to take the wages for cupping and he forbade him from it. He continued asking him and seeking his permission until he said: "Use it to give fodder to your water-carrying camels, and to feed your slaves". He said: There are narrations on this topic from Rafi' bin Khadij, Abu Juhaifah, Jabir, and As-Sa'ib bin Yazid. Abu 'Eisa said: The Hadith of Muhayyisah is a Hasan Sahih Hadith. This is acted upon according to some of the people of knowledge. Ahmad said: "If I am asked for something by Cupper then I deny him, acting upon this Hadith".
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُحَيِّصَةَ، أَخِي بَنِي حَارِثَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ اسْتَأْذَنَ النَّبِيَّ فِي إِجَارَةِ الْحَجَّامِ فَنَهَاهُ عَنْهَا فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَسْأَلُهُ وَيَسْتَأْذِنُهُ حَتَّى قَالَ ‏ "‏ اعْلِفْهُ نَاضِحَكَ وَأَطْعِمْهُ رَقِيقَكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ وَأَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ وَجَابِرٍ وَالسَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ مُحَيِّصَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ ‏.‏ وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ بَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ إِنْ سَأَلَنِي حَجَّامٌ نَهَيْتُهُ وَآخُذُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's prohibition of taking wages for cupping. It is narrated by Ibn Muhayyisah of Banu Harithah from his father that he sought permission from the Prophet to take the wages for cupping but was denied. He continued asking him until he said that it should be used to give fodder to water carrying camels and feed slaves instead. Other narrators such as Rafi' bin Khadij, Abu Juhaifah, Jabir and As-Sa'ib bin Yazid have also reported this hadith which has been classified as a Hasan Sahih Hadith by Abu 'Eisa. According to some people of knowledge this hadith is acted upon in practice with Ahmad saying that if asked for something by a cupper then one should deny him based on this hadith.
