Earnings of Certain Occupations Are Filth

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the earnings of a cupper, fornicator, and dog seller are considered filth.

Narrated Rafi' b. Khadij: That the Messenger of Allah said: "The earnings of the Cupper is filth, the earnings of the fornicator (from harlotry) is filth, and the price of a dog is filth". He said: There are narrations on this topic from 'Umar, 'Ali, Ibn Mas'ud, Abu Masu'd, Jabir, Abu Hurairah, Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn 'Umar, and 'Abdullah bin Ja'far. Abu 'Eisa said: The Hadith is Rafi' is a Hasan Sahih Hadith. This is acted upon according to most of the people of knowledge, they disliked the price of a dog. This the view of Ash-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Some of the people of knowledge permitted the price of the hunting dog.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the earnings of a cupper, fornicator, and dog seller are considered filth. This is based on a hadith narrated by Rafi' b. Khadij which states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said "The earnings of the Cupper is filth, the earnings of the fornicator is filth, and the price of a dog is filth". This hadith has been accepted as Hasan Sahih by most people in knowledge and it has been acted upon accordingly with most scholars such as Ash-Shafi'i, Ahmad and Ishaq disapproving any form of earning from these occupations. However some scholars have allowed earning from hunting dogs only. This hadith teaches us to stay away from certain occupations which may be deemed unlawful or unethical in Islam such as prostitution or selling dogs for entertainment purposes since any money earned through these activities will be considered impure or filthy according to Islamic teachings.
