Jami at-Tirmidhi 1257 (Book 14, Hadith 58) #26831
Sacrifice and Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent Hakim bin Hizam to buy an animal for sacrifice and when he profited from the sale of the animal, he bought another one with the profit and returned both to the Prophet.

Narrated Habib bin Abi Thabit: From Hakim bin Hizam, that the Messenger of Allah sent Hakim bin Hizam with a Dinar to buy an animal for Udhiyyah (an animal for sacrifice) for him. He purchases an Udhiyyah which he sold and profited a Dinar from, so he purchased another in its place. And he returned to the Messenger of Allah with Udhiyyah and the Dinar, so he said: 'The sheep is for sacrifice and Dinar is for charity'." Abu 'Eisa said: We do not know of the Hadith of Hakim bin Hizam except through this route, and Habib bin Abi Thabit did not hear from Hakim bin Hizam - in my view.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's commands even if they are difficult; Be generous with your wealth; Help those in need; Use your wealth wisely according to Islamic teachings; Show faithfulness towards God by following His orders without hesitation or doubt.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man named Hakim bin Hizam who was sent by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to buy an animal for sacrifice. When he purchased it and sold it at a profit of one dinar, instead of keeping it for himself he bought another animal with that money as well. He then returned both animals to the Prophet as a sign of his obedience and faith in Allah's teachings. This hadith teaches us that we should always be generous with our wealth even if we have earned it through honest means. We should not forget that all our wealth comes from Allah so we must use it in ways that please Him such as charity or helping those in need. It also shows us how important obedience is; even though Hakim could have kept the extra dinar for himself out of greed or selfishness but instead chose to obey Allah's commands which ultimately brought him more reward than any material gain ever could have done.
