Prohibiting Muhaqalah and Muzabanah Transactions

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited Muhaqalah and Muzabanah, which are two types of sales transactions.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah prohibited Muhaqalah and Muzabanah. He said: There are narrations on this topic from Ibn 'Umar, Ibn 'Abbas, Zaid bin Thabit, Sa'd, Jabir, Rafi' bin Khadij, and Abu Sa'eed. Abu 'Eisa said: The Hadith of Abu Hurairah is a Hasan Sahih Hadith. Muhaqalah is selling corps for wheat, and Muzabanah is selling dates that are on the date-palm for dried dates. This is acted upon according to the most of the people of knowledge, they disliked sales of Muhaqalah and Muzabanah.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الإِسْكَنْدَرَانِيُّ، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْمُحَاقَلَةِ وَالْمُزَابَنَةِ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَزَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ وَسَعْدٍ وَجَابِرٍ وَرَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏ وَالْمُحَاقَلَةُ بَيْعُ الزَّرْعِ بِالْحِنْطَةِ ‏.‏ وَالْمُزَابَنَةُ بَيْعُ الثَّمَرِ عَلَى رُءُوسِ النَّخْلِ بِالتَّمْرِ ‏.‏ وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ أَكْثَرِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ كَرِهُوا بَيْعَ الْمُحَاقَلَةِ وَالْمُزَابَنَةِ

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited two types of sales transactions known as muhaqalah and muzabanah. According to the hadith narrated by Abu Huraira, muhaqalah is selling corps for wheat, while muzabanh is selling dates that are on the date-palm for dried dates. This prohibition was also supported by other narrators such as Ibn 'Umar, Ibn 'Abbas, Zaid bin Thabit, Sa'd, Jabir, Rafi' bin Khadij and Abu Sa'eed. This hadith has been classified as a Hasan Sahih Hadith according to scholars of Islamic knowledge who have also disliked these kinds of sales transactions due to their nature. Therefore this hadith teaches us about the importance of following Islamic teachings in our daily lives even when it comes to commercial activities such as buying or selling goods or services.
