Divorce and Iddah of Slave Women

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the divorce for a slave woman is two divorces and her Iddah is two menstruations.

Muzahir bin Aslam narrated that Al-Qasim narrated from Aishah that: The Messenger of Allah said: "The divorce for a slave woman is two divorces, and her Iddah is two menstruations".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect all people regardless of their social status or wealth .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the rules of divorce and 'iddah for slave women. According to this hadith, the number of divorces for a slave woman is two and her 'iddah period is also two menstrual cycles. This means that if a man divorces his slave wife twice in one sitting or over time, then she will be considered divorced after her second menstrual cycle ends. During this period she cannot marry another man until it ends. This hadith shows us how important it was to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to ensure justice even for those who were not free citizens at the time such as slaves. It also teaches us about the importance of respecting all people regardless of their social status or wealth.
