This hadith explains the importance of distinguishing between what is lawful and unlawful in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that the distinction between the two can be made through Duff and voice. Duff refers to a drum or tambourine which was used to announce something important such as a call for prayer or an announcement of a new law or ruling. Voice refers to any sound that can be heard by people such as words spoken out loud or even music played on instruments like flutes or drums. Both of these methods are used to make it clear what is permissible in Islam and what isn’t so that people can follow the laws set forth by Allah SWT without confusion.
