The Four Sunan of the Messengers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us four Sunan, which are life-long habits that should be practiced.

Abu Ayyub narrated that : The Messenger of Allah said: "Four are from the Sunan of the Messengers: Al-Hayat, using Attar, the Siwak, and marriage".
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الشِّمَالِ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ أَرْبَعٌ مِنْ سُنَنِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ الْحَيَاءُ وَالتَّعَطُّرُ وَالسِّوَاكُ وَالنِّكَاحُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ وَثَوْبَانَ وَابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَعَائِشَةَ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَأَبِي نَجِيحٍ وَجَابِرٍ وَعَكَّافٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.‏ حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خِدَاشٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الشِّمَالِ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ حَفْصٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَرَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ هُشَيْمٌ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرُوا فِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي الشِّمَالِ وَحَدِيثُ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ وَعَبَّادِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ أَصَحُّ

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us four important habits that we should practice throughout our lives. These habits are known as the Sunan of the Messengers and include Al-Hayat, using Attar, Siwak and marriage. Al Hayat is a term used to refer to living a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious food and exercising regularly. Attar is an Arabic term for perfume or fragrance; it is recommended to use it before praying or engaging in any other religious activities. Siwak refers to brushing one's teeth with a special stick called Miswak which has many health benefits such as preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Lastly, marriage is encouraged in Islam as it helps build strong families and communities while also providing companionship for both partners involved in the relationship.
