The Prohibition of An-Na'i

SUMMARY: Hudaifah heard the Prophet Muhammad prohibiting people from bragging about themselves.

Bilal bin Yahya Al-Absiy narrated that: Hudaifah (bin Al-Yaman) said: "When I do not announce about me to anyone, indeed I fear that it would be An-Na'i, and I heard the Messenger of Allah prohibiting from An-Na'i".
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ بْنُ بَكْرِ بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبِيبُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ الْعَبْسِيُّ، عَنْ بِلاَلِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْعَبْسِيِّ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ، قَالَ إِذَا مِتُّ فَلاَ تُؤْذِنُوا بِي أَحَدًا إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يَكُونَ نَعْيًا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَنْهَى عَنِ النَّعْىِ ‏.‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of An-Na'i which means unnecessary boasting or bragging. It was narrated by Bilal bin Yahya Al-Absiy who heard it from Hudaifah bin Al-Yaman that the Prophet Muhammad prohibited people from doing this act. This hadith teaches us to be humble and not to boast about ourselves as it is a sign of arrogance and pride which are qualities that should be avoided in Islam. We should also remember that Allah knows our intentions and deeds so we should strive to do good deeds for His sake only without expecting any reward or recognition from others.
