The Prophet's Practice of I'tikaf

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad would perform I'tikaf and allow Aishah to comb his hair. He would only enter the house for personal needs.

Aishah narrated: "When the Messenger of Allah performed I'tikaf, he would bring his head near me so I could comb it, and he would not enter the house except for some personal needs".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind to your loved ones; Take care of your basic needs; Strive to make sure your actions are pleasing to Allah even during times when you're not actively worshipping Him; Perform I’tikaÌ„f if possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
During the Islamic month of Ramadan, Muslims practice a spiritual retreat called 'I'tikaf'. This is when they stay in a mosque for 10 days and spend their time in prayer, reflection, and worship. During this time, the Prophet Muhammad allowed his wife Aishah to comb his hair as an act of kindness and love. He also only left the mosque for personal needs such as using the restroom or eating meals. This hadith teaches us that even during times of spiritual retreat we should still be kind to our loved ones and take care of our basic needs. We should also strive to make sure that our actions are pleasing to Allah even during times when we are not actively worshipping Him.
