Jami at-Tirmidhi 751 (Book 8, Hadith 70) #26316
Fasting on the Day of Arafah

SUMMARY: Ibn Umar was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah and he said that none of the four rightly guided caliphs fasted on it, and he himself does not fast it, nor order it nor forbid it.

Ibn Abi Najib narrated from his father who said: "Ibn Umar was asked about fasting (the Day of) Arafah (at Arafat). He said: 'I performed Hajj with the Prophet, and he did not fast it, and with Abu Bakr, and he did not fast it, and with Umar, and he did not fast it, and with Uthman, and he did not fast it. I do no fast it, nor order it nor forbid it".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting on the day of Arafah. It was narrated by Ibn Abi Najib from his father who said that when Ibn Umar was asked about fasting on this day, he replied that none of the four rightly guided caliphs - Prophet Muhammad, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman - ever fasted this day. He also added that he himself does not fast this day nor orders anyone to do so or forbids anyone from doing so either. This hadith teaches us to be humble in our religious practices and to follow in the footsteps of our predecessors without blindly following them as well as being open-minded towards different opinions regarding religious matters. We should also remember that we are all human beings with limited knowledge and wisdom; therefore we should always strive for more knowledge before making any decisions regarding religious matters or anything else for that matter.
