Breaking Fast without Consequence

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) reassured Umm Hani that it was not a sin for her to break her fast by drinking something.

Umm Hani narrated: "I was sitting with the Prophet when some drink was brought, so he drank from it, then he offered it to me and I drank it. Then I said: 'I have indeed sinned, so seek forgiveness for me'. He said: 'What is that?' I said: 'I was fasting, then I broke the fast'. He said: 'Were you performing a fast that you had to make up?' I said: 'No'. He said: 'Then it is no harm for you'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of fasting during Ramadan and how breaking one's fast does not necessarily mean that one has committed a sin. Umm Hani was sitting with the Prophet when some drink was brought and he drank from it before offering it to her. She then felt guilty for breaking her fast and asked for forgiveness but the Prophet reassured her that she had done no wrong as she wasn't performing a make-up fast. This hadith teaches us that we should not feel guilty if we break our fast unintentionally or due to an emergency situation as Allah is Most Merciful and will forgive us if we seek His forgiveness sincerely. It also teaches us to be mindful of our actions during Ramadan so as to reap its full rewards in this world and in the hereafter.
