Sahih al-Bukhari 2743 (Book 55, Hadith 6) #2622
Reducing Proportions in Bequeathing

SUMMARY: It is recommended to reduce the proportion of what one bequeaths by will to a fourth of the whole legacy, as even one third is too much.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: I recommend that people reduce the proportion of what they bequeath by will to the fourth (of the whole legacy), for Allah's Messenger said, "One-third, yet even one third is too much".

QUICK LESSONS:
Reduce proportions when making wills and leaving something behind for others after death .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, recommends that people reduce the proportion of what they bequeath by will to a fourth of the whole legacy. This means that if someone has an estate or property worth $100,000 and they want to leave it in their will for someone else, then it would be best for them to only give $25,000 instead of giving away more than that. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said that even one third is too much. This suggests that it is better not to give away too much money or property when making a will and leaving something behind for others after death. It teaches us about being generous but also being mindful about how much we are giving away so we can ensure our loved ones are taken care of without going overboard with our generosity.
