Sahih al-Bukhari 2730 (Book 54, Hadith 18) #2610
The Exile of Jews from Khaibar

SUMMARY: Umar ibn Khattab, the second Caliph of Islam, exiled the Jews from Khaibar after they attacked and dislocated his son's hands and feet.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: When the people of Khaibar dislocated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar's hands and feet, 'Umar got up delivering a sermon saying, "No doubt, Allah's Messenger made a contract with the Jews concerning their properties, and said to them, 'We allow you (to stand in your land) as long as Allah allows you'. Now 'Abdullah bin 'Umar went to his land and was attacked at night, and his hands and feet were dislocated, and as we have no enemies there except those Jews, they are our enemies and the only people whom we suspect, I have made up my mind to exile them". When 'Umar decided to carry out his decision, a son of Abu Al-Haqiq's came and addressed 'Umar, "O chief of the believers, will you exile us although Muhammad allowed us to stay at our places, and made a contract with us about our properties, and accepted the condition of our residence in our land?" 'Umar said, "Do you think that I have forgotten the statement of Allah's Messenger , ie: What will your condition be when you are expelled from Khaibar and your camel will be carrying you night after night?" The Jew replied, "That was joke from Abul-Qasim"'.Umar said, "O the enemy of Allah! You are telling a lie"'.Umar then drove them out and paid them the price of their properties in the form of fruits, money, camel saddles and ropes, etc".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect contracts , Serve justice

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Umar ibn Khattab, the second Caliph of Islam, exiling the Jews from Khaibar after they attacked and dislocated his son's hands and feet. Umar was following a contract that was made between Muhammad ﷺ and the Jews concerning their properties. He allowed them to stay in their land as long as Allah allowed them to do so. However, when Abdullah bin 'Umar went to his land he was attacked at night by some unknown people who were later revealed to be Jewish people. This caused Umar to make up his mind to exile them all out of Khaibar despite Muhammad ﷺ allowing them to stay in their land with a contract concerning their properties. When one Jew questioned him on this decision he reminded him of what Muhammad ﷺ said about being expelled from Khaibar which made it clear that this decision had been taken seriously by Umar ibn Khattab. He then paid them for all their possessions before exiling them out of Khaibar.

This hadith teaches us that contracts should be respected even if it means going against our own desires or interests because Allah will always take care of us if we are doing what is right according to His laws and teachings given through His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . It also teaches us that justice should be served no matter how hard it may seem or how much we may not want it because Allah will always reward those who are just in their dealings with others even if they have suffered at the hands of those same people before hand.
