Wa'il bin Hujr narrated: "I saw Allah's Messenger when he prostrated placing his knees (on the ground) before his hands, and when he got up, he raised his hands before his knees".
The act of prostration also serves as a reminder that we are all equal in front of Allah SWT regardless of our social or economic status; everyone must bow down in humility when praying to Him. Furthermore, it teaches us that we should always strive for excellence in our worship and never take it lightly or become complacent about it.
