The Importance of Attending Congregational Prayers

SUMMARY: Ibn Abbas warns that a person who does not attend the Friday prayer or congregational prayer despite fasting and praying at night will be punished in the Fire.

Mujahid said: "Ibn Abbas was asked about a man who fasted during the day and stood (in prayers) during the night, but he did not attend the Friday prayer nor congregational prayer. He replied: 'He is in the Fire'."
قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ وَسُئِلَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ، يَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَيَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ لاَ يَشْهَدُ جُمُعَةً وَلاَ جَمَاعَةً قَالَ هُوَ فِي النَّارِ ‏.‏ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ هَنَّادٌ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُحَارِبِيُّ عَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَمَعْنَى الْحَدِيثِ أَنْ لاَ يَشْهَدَ الْجَمَاعَةَ وَالْجُمُعَةَ رَغْبَةً عَنْهَا وَاسْتِخْفَافًا بِحَقِّهَا وَتَهَاوُنًا بِهَا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Mujahid and it conveys an important message from Ibn Abbas. He warns that a person who fasts during the day and stands in prayers during the night but does not attend Friday prayer or congregational prayer will be punished in the Fire. This hadith emphasizes on attending congregational prayers as it is one of the most important pillars of Islam. It teaches us to prioritize our religious obligations over other activities and to make sure we are fulfilling all our duties towards Allah SWT. It also reminds us that no matter how much we pray or fast if we do not fulfill our obligations towards Allah SWT then all those deeds will be worthless on Judgement Day.
