Jami at-Tirmidhi 190 (Book 2, Hadith 42) #25755
Calling for Prayer

SUMMARY: Umar suggested that the Muslims should have someone call for prayer instead of using a bell or a trumpet like the Christians and Jews. Allah's Messenger then asked Bilal to stand up and call for prayer.

Ibn Umar narrated: "When the Muslims arrived in AI-Madinah, they used to assemble for the Salat, and guess the time for it there was no one who called for it (the prayer). One day they discussed that and some of them said that they should use a bell like the bell the Christians use. Others said they should use a trumpet like the horn the Jews use. But Umar bin Al-Khattab said: 'Wouldn't it better if we had a man call for the prayer?'" He said: "So Allah's Messenger said: 'O Bilal! Stand up and call for the Salat'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Muslims should pray. When the Muslims arrived in Al-Madinah they used to assemble for their prayers but there was no one who called them to do so. Some people suggested that they use a bell like the Christians or a trumpet like the Jews but Umar suggested that they have someone call out for prayer instead. Allah's Messenger then asked Bilal to stand up and call out for prayer which became an important part of Muslim tradition ever since then. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to follow traditions and also shows us how we can come together as a community by following certain practices such as praying together at specific times of day with someone calling us all together in order to do so.
